For over two centuries, the Métis have fought for acknowledgement as an Indigenous people and as a Nation. This struggle has played out on the battlefield, in the courts, and at the negotiating table. The main issues centred on governance, land rights, and resources. In their new book, The True Canadians, authors Patricia Russell and David Wylynko provide readers with an engaging re-telling of Canadian history from a Métis perspective and an account of recent triumphs in the Métis quest for recognition, reconciliation, and Nationhood status within Canada. With a Foreword by former Prime Minister Paul Martin, the book chronicles Métis interactions with major world figures, including Queen Elizabeth II and Pope Francis, and spans the tenures of prime ministers from John A. Macdonald to Justin Trudeau.

Patricia Russell formerly worked as a journalist and as a communications manager with the Métis Nation of Alberta. She is a descendant of the Ladouceur and Sanderson Métis families of Lac La Biche, Fort Chipewyan, and Fort Fitzgerald in Alberta and of Fort Smith, Fort Resolution, and Hay River in the Northwest Territories.
